Barry Bonds underwent surgery to remove bone chips from his left elbow Monday and there were no complications, agent Jeff Borris said Wednesday.

Soon it will be time to see how healthy the market response will be to the seven-time MVP.

Borris intends to shop around Bonds, especially after Giants managing partner Peter Magowan said Monday that the club no longer considers the 42-year-old its centerpiece player.

Borris said he was familiar with Magowan’s comments but would not shed light on how they might affect negotiations.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea to get into verbal jousting with Peter in the newspaper,” Borris said.

Borris said Bonds would file for free agency after the World Series and is prepared to listen when the Giants call during their 15-day window of exclusivity to negotiate contract terms.

Other stars who came under suspicion of using performance-enhancing drugs have been forced to retire after finding limited interest, including Rafael Palmeiro and Sammy Sosa. But Borris expects to have a market for Bonds.

“Barry is not even in the same universe with those guys,” Borris said last week.
