Officials this week approved a villagewide ban on smoking in most public places beginning Jan. 2.

Trustee Kathleen Fenton said she wants Orland Park to take the lead on the issue.

“It’s a health issue, not an issue between smokers and non-smokers,” Fenton said. “Smaller communities look to Orland Park and Tinley Park to take the lead on these things.”

The ban would apply to all village parks, sports fields and government buildings. Smokers would be allowed to smoke in designated areas outside hotels, restaurants and taverns (this sentence as published has been corrected in this text).

Fenton said all villages are required to pass non-smoking ordinances by next year or automatically fall under provisions of a Cook County ordinance, which is more restrictive.
