The Illinois defense has shown significant improvement in the three most important statistical categories–interceptions, fumbles recovered and sacks. Last year the Illini finished the 11-game season with four interceptions, four fumble recoveries and 12 sacks. Now, after five games, they have five interceptions, three fumble recoveries and 10 sacks. . . . Five of the sacks came in Saturday’s 23-20 victory at Michigan State and were credited to linebacker J Leman, end Derek Walker and tackles David Lindquist, Josh Norris and Chris Norwell. . . . Jason Reda, who kicked the game-winning 39-yard field goal with six seconds to play plus earlier field goals of 27 and 34 yards, was the Big Ten special teams player of the week.
