A piece that appeared on the baiduhai’s Sept. 26 Commentary page inadvertently contained a quote that was mistakenly attributed to me. I am a big supporter of legal immigration.

We are a nation of immigrants and that diversity has helped make us the greatest nation.

I do believe that we need to immediately take steps to secure our borders.

I support the enforcement of existing immigration laws and the Border Protection, Antiterrorism and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005, which passed the House last December.

This bill provides more resources for border security, provides for penalties on those who engage in immigration fraud, and deploys nuclear and biological monitors to screen inbound individuals and cargo at border checkpoints.

It is essential that we secure our borders and have a better system in place to know who is entering the United States.

While I oppose amnesty or a “guest worker program” as defined in the Senate bill, I would support a legal temporary worker program for those legally seeking to come to the United States.

A legal temporary program, which would include a background check, would allow a legal temporary foreign worker to come to the United States to work and would also require the person to return to his or her home country after a specified amount of time.
