If pepperoni seems passe and sausage is so last year, check out these two new takes on a pizza.

Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza

UNO CHICAGO GRILL

www.unos.com

$8.49, individual pie (7-inch diameter)

1,690 calories, 98 g fat, 2,500 mg sodium

Calling itself a pizza that tastes like it “came off a backyard barbecue,” this deep-dish pie has everything–we mean everything–you’ve come to expect from a bacon cheeseburger.

First thought: Diced plum tomatoes and sweet grilled onions give the pizza nice texture and flavor. Not blanketed in a shallow pond of cheese or tomato sauce, thank goodness, though the restaurant claims it adds ketchup. Guess this adds to the bacon cheeseburger illusion, which they pull off rather well.

On second thought: Mustard? Pickles? Fortunately you only get a hint of them, and it works OK in moderation. Could have used more bacon though.

Sicilian Lasagna Pizza

PIZZA HUT

www.pizzahut.com

$10.99, eight slices (13-by-9 inches)

310 calories, 15 g fat, 980 mg sodium (one slice)

What happens when you marry two standards of Italian cuisine? Pizza Hut introduces their proud newlywed.

First thought: Heavy on the Italian herb seasoning, thanks to an interesting basil and oregano infused crust with the trademark golden crunch. The creamy white patches on top are ricotta cheese. Mozzarella and Parmesan round out the cheesy trio, and I guess that’s beef.

On second thought: It suffers from identity crisis. Like a “woe is me” high school freshman, this aspires to look and taste like something it’s not. Just be yourself, pizza. We like you just the way you are.
