Both of Notre Dame’s regular-season defeats last year were by three points. But Saturday’s 47-21 loss to Michigan was a rout. Does the type of loss dictate how coach Charlie Weis helps his team move on? Yes, he said.

“When a loss is close, you’re just trying to lift their spirits because sometimes there are more positive things happening in a close game than a loss like that, when the loss is by a wide margin,” Weis said Sunday.

“You have to take it play by play rather than putting it all together [and] analytically give reasons how things could have been different if you changed a half-dozen plays.”

But it’s important to remind players that possibilities aren’t good enough, Weis said. “You don’t get do-overs on Saturday.”
