In 20 years on the PGA Tour, Joey Sindelar has won seven tournaments and made countless eagles but never a double eagle. Saturday on Medinah’s par-5 fifth hole, he sank a 241-yard 3-wood on his second shot for the rare feat. “It was my first in practice, play, anything,” Sindelar, 48, said. “About five years ago I started [thinking] that I hadn’t had one and I surely couldn’t retire until I did.” Sindelar, who shot 73 Saturday and is at 1 over, acknowledged a double eagle is “all luck,” but said, “it was a huge thrill.” Sindelar saved the ball and will put it–dirt and all–in the crystal keepsake the PGA awards for eagles. “I get to do it after making the cut in a major at Medinah,” he said. “How can you ask for better than that?”
