But Lage offered no details during a visit to La Paz, Bolivia’s capital.
The 79-year-old Castro has not appeared in public since it was announced Monday that he had undergone a complicated operation and temporarily ceded power to his brother Raul, the 75-year-old defense minister.
Raul Castro also has not spoken publicly since he became acting president, something that has caused some consternation here. But Cuban National Assembly President Ricardo Alarcon told Agence France-Presse that Raul Castro “is not some kind of movie star.”
“It is his job constitutionally to take over for Fidel in the event of temporary absence, and that is what he is doing,” Alarcon said.
Lage is the fifth top-level official to provide an upbeat assessment of Castro’s operation, which caused shock and fear across this island nation where Castro has ruled for 47 years.
One Havana-based diplomat said Saturday that he now believes the official version of events after initially harboring skepticism.
“I believe it’s true that it was a very difficult operation, the operation went well, and the recovery is going right,” said the diplomat, who asked not to be named.
Meanwhile, security remained tight in Havana on a day that marked the 12th anniversary of the worst civil disturbances to hit the island since the 1959 revolution.
