Pat Fitzgerald didn’t waste much time showing he’ll have a hands-on-style as Northwestern’s head football coach. Senior guard Ryan Keenan was halfway through leading the team through calisthenics before the season’s first practice Friday in Evanston when Fitzgerald stepped in and made him start over. Some of the young players weren’t getting it right. “We coach attention to detail every day, every drill,” said Fitzgerald, succeeding mentor Randy Walker, who died June 29. “The minute we walk between the white lines, we’re coaching detail. The littlest things can make the biggest difference between us being 6-6 or 7-5 and undefeated and going to the Rose Bowl. We’re going to make sure we overturn every stone to get the job done.” Said Keenan: “We always have to let the freshmen know what we’re looking for.”
