Using his own mathematical skills, RedEye’s Bag Boy takes a look at what this series sweep means for Cubs fans.

1972

This was the Cubs first four-game sweep of the Cardinals at Wrigley Field since 1972. You know what’s happened since 1972? St. Louis has played in four World Series and won one of them. The Cubs? Oh, don’t play dumb with me.

6-0

Carlos Zambrano went 6-0 in July, so he’s the first Cubs pitcher to win six games in one month since 1979. That was Rick Reuschel’s seven wins. Cubs ended up 80-82 that year. Cubs need to go 37-21 to match that. Wow.

Look at the race for the NL wild-card spot. Only 11 soon-to-fold-up-and-pack-it-in NL teams stand between the Cubs and the playoffs, although the 12th-place Cubs hold a commanding lead over the Pirates for last place overall.

First-place St. Louis leads the Cubs by that many games in the division. That reminds me, I have a poster at my desk that reads: “Pessimism: Every dark cloud has a silver lining, but lightning kills hundreds of people each year who are trying to find it.”
