Q. Could you tell me if one can use roofing felt in place of Tyvek before putting cedar siding on? Is there any advantage/disadvantage to doing this?

Sue Chande

A. Felt or water-resistant building paper or house wrap should be used under siding to protect the building from the effects of weather, said Jerry Bednarski of First Siding and Windows of Chicago. Roofing felt is generally a crude paperboard impregnated with tar or asphaltic bitumen. It is produced in web form and supplied in rolls and installed under siding or roofs.

Although there are a variety of top brand name options available, Bednarski said, the less expensive roofing felt works just fine. Just be sure to follow a manufacturer’s installation requirements to obtain the maximum exterior weather protection and interior air ventilation.

DuPont’s Tyvek HomeWrap is described by the company as a blend of fine, high-density polyethylene fibers that resist air and water infiltration from the outside while also allowing moisture vapor from inside to diffuse through its sheeting to prevent interior moisture damage.
