Des Plaines aldermen voted 8-0 this week to pay $107,000 for a special census that the city said is expected to generate a net gain in tax revenue of $400,000 to $750,000 in four years.
After the initial payment to the Census Bureau, the city would have to spend about another $61,000 once census takers hit the streets early next year, an official said Monday.
State payments reflecting an expected population rise would be collected over four years starting next year, officials said.
Ald. Tom Becker said that if the city delays the census, the results could show an even bigger population increase as several large condominium complexes begin to fill up, but City Manager David Niemeyer said a delay would cost an estimated $16,000 per month.
