Consultants studying Mokena’s 191st Street commercial corridor want to get some ideas from the people who live there.

Village officials this week urged residents to attend two “listening sessions” next week to discuss development plans with consultants from HOK Planning Group. The open-house style meetings are slated for 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday and 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Pipe Fitters’ union headquarters at 10850 187th St.

The Village Board hired the consulting firm earlier this year to do a $50,000 study updating the plan for the 191st Street corridor and setting up some appearance guidelines.

Community Development Director Paul Gorte said the study area takes in the land between Interstate Highway 80 and 191st Street and extends to the west side of Wolf Road.

The agenda for the sessions includes a report on the consultants’ observations about the 191st Street corridor and an opportunity for residents to share their opinions about land use.

A study of another commercial area, Mokena’s traditional downtown on Front Street, is about to commence.

Trustees approved a resolution to apply for a $100,000 state technical assistance grant from the Regional Transportation Authority to pay for the downtown study.

Village Administrator John Downs said the village’s share of the cost would be $20,000.
