Property tax rebate applications are in the mail.

Mayor Jim Holland this week urged residents to be on the lookout for the forms. “Don’t throw it away. It’s not junk mail,” he cautioned.

Taxpayers have until July 31 to fill out and return the application form.

The tax break, like the town’s share of the homeowners’ property tax bill, is not large, so the decrease of 25 percent of the village tax is expected to lower the average tax bill by about 1.75 percent.

Still, business is good and sales tax revenues are healthy, so some of that money is being returned.

“This is really a refund to the residents of excess sales tax revenue,” Trustee Cindy Heath said last month.

Village officials expect to hand about $300,000 back to the taxpayers, about the same amount as last year.

To qualify for the rebate, residents must prove they lived in Frankfort for at least 190 days during the tax year, Holland said. Utility and tax bills can be used as evidence of residence, he said.

Residents with questions can call Alice Schomburg, deputy clerk, at 815 469-2177.
