After Tony Stewart dominated the Pepsi 400 on Saturday night for the second straight year, fans at Daytona International Speedway didn’t even have to reach out to touch him. He literally fell in among them–on their side of the fence. Stewart began to endear himself at Daytona last year when he climbed the fence in salute to the spectators. Saturday night he went overboard, scaling the fence, capturing the checkered flag and then dropping impromptu into the “mosh pit,” as he called it. Why? “I don’t know why I do half the stupid stuff I do,” said Stewart, bound for Chicagoland Speedway this week. “There was no way I was going to let those fans down. I was either going to get all the way up or I was going to fall on my butt.”
