A banquet facility that once hosted a boisterous show by rapper Vanilla Ice is still drawing flak from neighbors about noise.

Resident Alan Hareld and several neighbors on the city’s north side say the Tuckaway Terrace’s patio speakers continue to pipe unwelcome music into their yards.

Hareld raised the issue at an advance meeting of the City Council Monday during consideration of a license allowing onsite sale and consumption of liquor. Hareld said he and neighbors didn’t oppose the license but wanted to ensure noise would be controlled.

Tuckaway, 2545 Plainfield Rd., needs to be able to provide liquor to meet its 2006 contractual obligations for about 10 wedding receptions and several parties, said Derek Brenczewski, manager of Tuckaway. The license, approved by the City Council, basically continues a permit by Will County before the facility was annexed into Joliet this year.

The facility, previously a restaurant-bar known as Tuckaway Tavern, is scheduled to be razed in October to make way for retail development.

Tuckaway’s neighbors have complained about noise before, especially in August 2001 when Vanilla Ice performed there.

Hareld said the noise issue arose again last weekend when recorded music was piped through outdoor speakers. City Atty. Jeff Plyman said the legitimacy of complaints would have to be determined by a responding patrol officer.
