Chicago gospel and R&B singer Mavis Staples has received the nation’s highest honor for folk and traditional artists.
She was named Thursday as one of 11 recipients of this year’s $20,000 National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowships. Her late father, Roebuck “Pops” Staples, received a fellowship in 1998, and they are the first father-daughter duo in the 24-year history of the award.
