Fret not, lovers of sauerbraten and Wiener schnitzel. German restaurants are alive and well in the Chicago area. But we understand the commotion. When the famed Berghoff restaurant in the Loop closed earlier this year, German foodies had conniptions, writing to At Play in search of eateries serving up sausage and spaetzle.
Well, the restaurant’s bar has reopened as 17 West at the Berghoff, joining the already opened Berghoff Cafe (lower level) in the Berghoff’s original location at 17 W. Adams St.
But a hankering for schnitzel and spaetzle should not go unfulfilled. Here are a few other restaurants serving German fare in the Chicago area. Check before you go–as a bonus, many of these have live music on tap as well.
Edelweiss. Seduces patrons away from its American offerings with an apple strudel and a stable of German beers. 7650 W. Irving Park Rd., Norridge; 708-452-6040.
Fritzl’s European Restaurant. All of the German mainstays–including beef rouladen and sauerbraten–are here. 377 N. Rand Rd., Lake Zurich; 847-540-8844.
Glunz Bavarian Haus. This Lincoln Square mainstay offers bratwurst, thuringer, spaetzle and sauerbraten, plus liver dumpling soup and an outdoor patio. 4128 N. Lincoln Ave., 773-472-4287.
