Embracing thoughts of summer, I decided to forgo my usual dark clothing purchases and spring for a pale pink skirt and, a few days later, a red shirt to match.

The red-and-pink combo worked, but I was stuck about footwear. My comfy Birkenstocks didn’t exactly go (too crunchy).

So, I turned to my own fashion police squad: my sister and my three best friends. Their e-mailed answers couldn’t have been more different:

Stephanie: “Sandals? Or maybe something tan, brown or blue.”

Heather: “I’d wear pink. Also depends on the shade of pink the skirt is.”

A few days later, Heather weighed in again: “By the way, I’d also consider wearing linen or beige-colored strappies.”

Vicki: “I think you could wear black shoes, or even brown. . . . Where are you going?”

Diana: “Tough one. I’m not sure that red and pink go together. I’d suggest wearing white, black or red shoes.”

With still no clear answer, I flipped through Shop Etc. magazine. Lo and behold, bursting from the page was a model wearing a red shirt, pink skirt and pink jacket (Page 66 in the May issue).

And on the model’s feet, the answer to the mystery, the solution to my friends’ contradictory advice … the photo cut off right below the knee and didn’t reveal the shoes.

I could always go barefoot.
