The Book of Daniel
By E.L. Doctorow
Plume, 303 pages, $15 paper
E.L. Doctorow’s acceptance of the Harold Washington Literary Award last week sparked a rereading of this 1971 book. In his third novel, Doctorow mixes fact and fiction in a way that illuminates all his fiction. This one, told through the perspective of a man whose parents were executed during the Cold War, is clearly drawn from the sad chapter of convicted spies Ethel and Julius Rosenberg in American history.
