Responding to dozens of residents’ concerns, the Naperville City Council this week rejected a plan for 81 town homes and single-family residences on unincorporated land on the north side of the city, but said it would consider a revised plan with only single-family homes.

After more than an hour of public testimony and deliberation Tuesday, City Council members agreed there were too many existing town homes on the north side and preferred to see a maintenance-free, single-family housing development.

Developer Kimball Hill Homes’ plan showed 59 town-home units and 22 single-family homes on 14 acres at Bauer Road and Mill Street. The land is unincorporated in Naperville Township and was the site of Mayneland Farm. Kimball Hill asked to rezone the site to a higher density residential use.

Nearby residents, submitting a petition with more than 1,300 signatures, have spoken out against the proposal and prefer to see the land developed entirely for single-family homes. Their concerns included traffic generation, impact on the adjacent elementary school and density.
