Des Plaines aldermen voted 7-1 this week in favor of preliminary plans for two six-story hotels on 4 acres in the 2800 block of South Mannheim Road.

The Harp Group, based in Lombard, proposed the development for a vacant site next to the Northwest Tollway during a Monday night City Council meeting. The development would include a suite-style hotel and a standard hotel aimed at business travelers using O’Hare International Airport, said Timothy Franzen, senior vice president of Harp Group.

There was a 4-4 deadlock after several aldermen objected to the developer’s request for 203 parking spaces for 372 rooms. The developers said most guests would be air travelers who would not use their own cars.

The developers later agreed to obtain off-site parking if any overflow occurred after the hotels were built.

“In a few more years when O’Hare starts rolling, you guys are going to hit a gold mine,” Ald. Dick Sayad said.
