Neil Young

“LIVING WITH WAR”

RATING: 3 SOUND LEVELS

Somebody evidently shook Neil Young out of his sentimental “Prairie Wind” reverie and shouted: “Wake up, old man! There’s a war going on!” The result is not one protest song, but a whole album’s worth that reaches a peak of politically agitated rage on “Let’s Impeach the President,” and closes with “America the Beautiful” sung by a 100-person choir. You might loathe his politics and question his timing–weren’t we “living with war” in 2004, when impeachment wouldn’t have been necessary?–but you can’t doubt the impassioned rage this album gets over on.
