Christmas has a way of surrounding Rich Rosko year-round, so it wasn’t surprising that even in the off-season he would welcome a magical gift: a tiny reindeer.
For years, Rosko and his wife, Karen, have owned a Christmas tree farm, a log cabin at Wisconsin’s Christmas Mountain Village resort and four pet reindeer, one of which the couple got from a Mundelein man who legally changed his name to Santa Claus.

One of the Roskos’ reindeer, Balsam, recently gave birth to a 10-pound calf called Canaan, as in fir. Canaan’s proud papa is also appropriately named: Douglas.
“We wanted to keep with the tradition,” said Rosko of Lake Villa. “They’re all [named after] Christmas trees.”
