“The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living”

When Mike Skinner (a.k.a. the Streets) is on, it’s amazing to behold. For example, “When You Wasn’t Famous” is brilliant–a dizzying mix of a contagious beat, Skinner’s unique British flow and lacerating, insightful lyrics. Unfortunately, on most of the new disc, Skinner’s quick wit gets dulled by plodding beats and a haze of mellow. Too much of “The Hardest Way” is lazy, bordering on boring. Maybe living has gotten a bit too easy for him.
