Baseball’s Top 10

RANK, TEAM

1. Joliet Catholic (9-0): Hot-hitting Mark Seifert went 2-for-2 with 4 RBIs in 4-3 win over Providence. Pitcher Nick Testin earned victory.

2. St. Rita (10-1): On Friday, Chris Chojnowski pitched complete game, allowing 1 run while striking out 6. Joe Dispensa provided offensive support by going 2-for-3 with RBI.

3. Carmel (9-1): Corsairs dropped 1st game in 3-0 loss to Benet in Flyers Classic championship. In semifinal Matt Diedrich pitched complete-game 4-hitter in 7-0 win over New Trier.

4. Elk Grove (10-1): Few highlights for Grenadiers in 1st loss of season, a 12-1 thumping at hands of West Chicago. Elk Grove’s only run scored on wild pitch.

5. Hinsdale Central (11-0): Took doubleheader from Willowbrook, winning 4-0 and 5-3 in a West Suburban crossover.

6. Notre Dame (6-1): No one should doubt toughness of East Suburban Catholic. Unofficially, the league went 60-19 in non-conference games through Thursday.

7. Oak Park (8-3): Huskies ran into tough Lyons team, dropping both ends of doubleheader. Game 1 was Lyons 11-1 in 5 innings and Game 2 was 14-5.

8. Naperville Central (8-3): Redhawks took fifth in Flyers Classic with 8-inning 2-1 win over Schaumburg. Matt Barry went distance for win. Mike Odenthal tripled and scored on Sean Joyce sacrifice fly. Colin Bates got win in 5-0 decision over Lake Park in consolation semifinal.

9. Lyons (9-2): Lions swept doubleheader from Oak Park, winning 11-1 in 1st game and 14-5 in 2nd. Brian Dunne belted 3-run homer in Game 1 while Jack Holden hit grand slam in Game 2. Dan Weston (3-0) picked up win in Game 2, striking out 8 in 7 innings. Casey McMurray was 5-for-6 and 4 RBIs on day while Justin Birks was combined 5-for-6 with 2 doubles.

10. Fenwick (8-2): Routed Seton 15-0 on Friday as Chris Curio belted homer and had 5 RBIs.

Softball’s Top 10

RANK, TEAM

1. Beecher (9-0): Jalyn Shearer (5-0, 0.30 ERA) pitched 1-hitter with 13 strikeouts in 9-0 victory over Wilmington. Alex Lagesse pitched perfect game in Friday’s 5-0 win over Grant Park.

2. Lincoln-Way Central (6-1): Swept Argo 7-1, 13-1 with Gabe Gavoni pitching no-hitter in Game 1 and Carly DeMarco 2-hitter in nightcap. Alicia Abbott had 6 hits on day.

3. Benet (6-0): Ace Lauren Rohan tossed 1-hitter with 11 strikeouts and Jaimie Makowski hit 2-run HR in 5-0 win over Naperville Central on Thursday.

4. Oak Park (7-1): Beneficiary of 20 walks in 14-0 win over Willowbrook on Friday. Huskies staff has pitched 7 straight shutouts. Alex Morocco and Mattie Prodanovic each had 3 RBIs.

5. Sandburg (4-2): 4 errors led to 7-5 loss to Minooka (10-2) even though Sara Olson fought off back spasms and wound up with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs. Lost 5-1 to Marist on Friday.

6. Glenbard North (11-1): Swept Streamwood 21-1, 15-0 with Kayla Smith and Elizabeth Walter each hitting 2 HRs on day.

7. Lemont (9-1): Won Hinsdale South tourney as Suzie Rzegocki 1-hit hosts in 11-0 win, homered against Mt. Assisi in 3-1 win and registered save in 11-8 victory over Lane Tech.

8. Downers Grove South (7-1): Swept Bolingbrook 14-0, 13-3 as freshman Brooke Andresen had grand slam, 2-run HR and 8 RBIs while Jamie Buckley had grand slam and 6 RBIs.

9. Fremd (4-0): Sam Wolfe (.733) had 3 RBIs in 8-1 win over Glenbrook North on Wednesday, one day before coach Jim Weaver’s wife Laura had twins.

10. Barrington (8-1): Kathleen Duffy (5-0) fired 2-hitter in 5-0 win over Rolling Meadows on Friday. Clair Voris had 2 RBIs and Holly Heinemann 2 hits, 2 runs.

Girls soccer’s Top 10

RANK, TEAM

1. New Trier (6-0): Captured title of Spring Classic with 3-0 victory over Brookfield Central (Wis.). Aly Wray, Alicia Johnson and Krista Akason scored. Also beat Libertyville 5-1 in semis as KayAnne Gummersall scored twice.

2. Neuqua Valley (4-0-3): Tied 2 games in St. Louis Shootout. In the first, Neuqua got goals from Meghan Schroeder and Dana Sherman in 2-2 tie with Notre Dame Sion (Mo.). In second, Wildcats got goal from Heather Marik to tie Ursuline Academy (Mo.) 1-1.

3. Waubonsie Valley (5-0-1): Rachel Bostick scored both goals and Annie Lorenz and Kylee Rodriguez picked up assists in 2-0 victory over Providence. Clarie Hanold recorded the shutout in goal.

4. Hinsdale Central (5-1-1): Defeated Andrew 3-1 as Cameron Meyers, Ashley Novak and Courtney Dressler scored.

5. Geneva (5-1): Fell for first time in 2-0 loss to St. Charles East.

6. Barrington (5-1): Jenny Solberg’s 2 second-half goals weren’t enough for Fillies in 4-2 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas (Mo.), considered the top girls team in nation, in the St. Louis Soccer Classic. Earlier, goal by Lauren Fraczek and keeper Matisse Miller’s six saves defeated Shawnee Mission East (Mo.) 1-0.

7. Downers Grove South (5-2): Mustangs rallied to beat cross-town rival Downers Grove North 2-1 on Thursday on goals by Ashley Caliendo and Danielle Janowiak.

8. Lyons (4-0): Katie Rehor scored all three goals in Lions’ victory over Evanston. Mary Daly had five saves for her 1st shutout. On Friday, Courtney Curby had a goal and assist in 3-1 victory over Providence. Rehor and Ashley Urben also scored.

9. Stevenson (1-2): Sliding after 2-1 loss to Deerfield Friday. Lisa Waitz and Liz Brenner had goals for the Warriors. Lake Forest also beat Patriots.

10. St. Charles East (4-1): Bounced back from 3-0 loss Thursday to Naperville Central to defeat Geneva 2-0.

Boys volleyball’s Top 10

RANK, TEAM

1. Sandburg (10-2): Eagles face No. 3 Lincoln-Way East in big Southwest Suburban test Thursday.

2. Wheaton Warrenville South (8-3): Tigers play host to No. 4 Naperville North in DuPage Valley clash this week.

3. Lincoln-Way East (8-1): Chargers are among three top-notch teams in first season of SouthWest Suburban play.

4. Naperville North (11-1): Huskies off to 2-0 start in DuPage Valley with key match at Wheaton South this week.

5. Maine South (3-2): Hawks surprised in first tourney of season as Willowbrook pulls off three-game win Friday and host Warren dropped them 25-12, 25-26 on Saturday.

6. Libertyville (2-1): Vernon Hills claimed three-game NSC opener on Friday. Wildcats played host to Worthington (Ohio) on Saturday.

7. Stagg (10-5): Chargers have quiet week ahead with just Thursday match with Andrew on the slate.

8. Lyons (5-1): Lions’ next tournament is Downers Grove South invite in late April.

9. Brother Rice (13-4): Rebuilding process quickly succeeding as revamped Crusaders off to fast start.
