Supreme Omelet on a Croissant

Dunkin’ Donuts

$3.29

590 calories; 38 g fat; 1040 mg sodium

Dunkin’ Donuts ups the ante with their latest entry in the ever-competitive breakfast sandwich world (see Starbucks, McDonald’s).

First thought: The omelet is crammed with bell peppers, scallions, potatoes, mushrooms and topped with cheese. For the cholesterol courageous, there’s a bacon, sausage or ham option.

On second thought: The bacon supreme omelet only had two measly excuses for “bacon.” And we can’t imagine eating more than one of these a month without our cardiologist ringing. But the croissant is warm, flaky though a bit oily, and the taste isn’t too bad.

Fish Snacker

KFC

99 cents

270 calories; 10 g fat; 640 mg sodium

On the strength of their popular Chicken Snacker sandwich, KFC tries the same formula with fish.

First thought: Two stale and doughy buns sandwich a rectangle fish fillet the size of a playing card. Small enough to fit in my cargo pants pocket.

On second thought: Bland, tiny and boring–like the Olsen Twins. The deep-fried pollock is flaky inside, but the acrid tartar sauce left a sour aftertaste.

Spicy Chicken Fillet Sandwich

Wendy’s

$3.19

The TV commercial had a guy taking a bite of this sandwich, recoil in its spiciness and empty a 5-gallon water bottle over his face. Truth in advertising?

First thought: The commercial lied, lied, lied. It’s amusingly piquant, at best. It looked so much more vibrant on television.

On second thought: That said, a fairly by-the-books sandwich. Crispy chicken, slightly dry at one restaurant, juicy at another. Nice Kaiser roll.

Sweet Heat Boneless Wings

Popeyes

$3.49 (six pieces)

Boneless wings are all the rage, and Popeyes continues the trend with its latest menu item: sweet heat boneless wings.

First thought: The sauce lives up to its name. You taste the sweet–a mild, molasses flavor–then comes the heat, which lingers in the back of the mouth.

On second thought: In some pieces, there appears to be more breading than chicken. And they’re not so much boneless wings, as they are breast meat lumped into a nugget shape.
