Mayor Donald Peloquin has begun talks with a developer to build a senior-living complex on land now occupied by the shuttered Mother of Sorrows Convent in Blue Island.
“It’s a nice project, and I think it will be a benefit to our residents and the area,” Peloquin said at a Tuesday night City Council meeting.
The convent buildings at 138th Street and Western Avenue would be demolished to make room for a 100-unit complex with rents ranging from $400 to $700 for residents age 62 and older, Peloquin said.
The units would include one bedroom, a kitchen and a living room.
The developer, identified as Senior Lifestyles, has done similar projects throughout the Chicago area, Peloquin said.
“It will put the property back on the tax rolls,” he said.
A school for special needs children operates in a building on the property, but Peloquin said the developer would likely need all the land for the project.
Peloquin did not give a timetable for construction of the project and said he would soon provide aldermen with more detailed plans.
