Aurora announced plans Tuesday to build a new central police headquarters on 25 acres along Indian Trail Road west of Farnsworth Avenue.

The city has budgeted $60 million to build the station on land owned by Aurora East School District 131. Construction is expected to take a couple of years, with the station slated to open in the summer or fall of 2008, officials said.

City officials said the undeveloped site was chosen because of its size and central location.

The current central police station was built in 1966, when the city had 118 police officers and about 66,500 residents. Now the city has close to 290 officers and an estimated population of more than 160,000.
