“The Cave”
SONY, $28.95
Who’s in it: Cole Hauser, Morris Chestnut, Piper Perabo
Recap: It’s the same old story in just a slightly different setting, with a host of anonymous actors and special effects stuck in a cave beset by killer beasties.
Best extra: The commentary track with the screenwriters reveals a great deal of intelligence and research, causing a massive disconnect with the ridiculousness onscreen.
Secrets revealed: “The most scary creatures I’ve seen, ever, are creatures with a bit of humanity in them,” declares creature designer Patrick Tatopoulos in the monster effects doc “Designing Evolution.”
Feature to skip: “Into the Cave” is a well-shot short about filming underwater which seems to have wandered onto this DVD from a nature special.
Trivia: “The Cave” was filmed primarily on-location in Romania, a nice alternative to the more familiar faux vistas of Hollywood sets and backlots.
If you liked this, try: “Alien,” to see the material done justice, 25 years before “The Cave.”
RATING: TWO PLAY BUTTONS.
