Q. We have a greenhouse window (about 48-by-48 inches) and the bottom ledge is wood. This window is very cold in the winter, and the temperature on the bottom ledge goes down to 55 degrees at night.
We have not come up with any good ideas on how to insulate this window. We have tried putting rugs, towels on the bottom ledge but that does not help. Do you have any ideas?

A. One thin pane of window glass isn’t good at keeping the cold from getting inside. It’s best to have double-pane glass. To keep the cold out, you can try adding weatherstripping or caulk around the frame to fill any air gaps, said Joseph Fanella of Blaine Windows in Stone Park. Also, you can try covering the window with a clear plastic window barrier. It’s an inexpensive way to keep drafts out.
If the area around the bottom sill is cold, you might need insulation between the exterior and interior walls, Fanella added.
