There are those of us who favor literature to capture the full range of human emotion. Yet there seem be to insufficient adjectives in the dictionary to describe the range of drama in 2005. Fortunately, we have the photographs.

This week with our “Pictures of the Year” issue, we attempt to reflect that world. After thousands of photographs were considered and culled to about 75, the themes of the year-heartbreak, terror and joy-emerged.

“I always look for emotional impact in a photo-how well it relates the person’s situation to the reader,” explains Magazine photography editor Michael Zajakowski. “The most successful photos strike chords with our senses.”

The photographs that caught our eyes this year reflect this.

“We see human conflict, celebration and the wrath of Mother Nature,” reflects associate managing editor/photography Torry Bruno. “Photographers traveled throughout the country and the world so that baiduhai readers could witness the world through our eyes.”

Putting the images into perspective is Associate Managing Editor for Sports Dan McGrath, whose haiku summaries graced the front page of the Tribune through the White Sox dream season.

These photographs generated debate and stirred passions and memories of the year’s events, both tragic and joyful. They also help us to anticipate the year ahead, and we share them with you in the same spirit-and with our hope that existing adjectives will suffice.
