Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

On the 5:28 commuter train a couple of Thursdays ago, the rattle and hum and chit-chat were broken suddenly by the conductor, who strode to the middle of the car and announced with some urgency, “There’s a lady in the next car who would like to come in here and sing `Silent Night.’ Does anyone have a problem with that? Will that bother anyone?”

Silence.

A minute later, a young woman made her way to the same spot through the passengers standing in the aisle. She raised her head and in a booming contralto sang the first six lines of the carol with her eyes closed and her voice undulating like a gospel soloist.

At the end, her face brightened, she said, “Merry Christmas, everyone,” turned and was gone.

Everyone seemed a little calmer and brighter after that.
