The Naperville City Council Tuesday approved a proposal for a 906-unit senior housing development on Naperville’s south side.

The council voted 8-1 for the project, called Carillon Club, and directed city staff to prepare ordinances and execute an annexation agreement.

The project, by Naperville-based Macom Corp. and Cambridge Homes, is on the north side of 95th Street east of the EJ&E Railroad and includes 5.5 acres for commercial, and 38 acres for a business park and future Metra station.

Councilwoman Darlene Senger voted against the project. She said she thinks the land should be reserved for commercial land uses and that 248th should remain open.

The proposal was controversial early on because the developer wants to close 248th between 91st and 95th Streets to avoid bisecting the housing development and to build 250th Avenue as an alternative road. Nearby industrial business owners opposed the closing of 248th because they said it would be detrimental to their trucking operations.

The project’s approval was made subject to the conditions of widening and improving 250th and a purchase agreement for the train site.
