Standing in the majestic interior of St. Stanislaus Kostka Roman Catholic Church, you wonder why there isn’t a ticket window and a line of people at the door.

The reason is simple: Most places of worship aren’t considered attractions. They aren’t Navy Pier or the Sears Tower. But many are worth a visit.

Some are architectural treasures that require years of study to understand. Some tell tales of people finding their way in a new land or are standing monuments to America’s proud–and sometimes dark–past.

With Christmas and Hanukkah both occurring this week, we wanted to give you glimpses of some wondrous places of worship in the Chicago area.

So, drive to Ukrainian Village for the fabulous Byzantine architecture of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church. Or travel to Glencoe for the modern, graceful North Shore Congregation Israel, created by the designer of the World Trade Center’s twin towers. Or go to the South Side for the African Jesus at St. Sabina Roman Catholic Church.

Take the time to visit these churches and synagogues. They’re glorious.
