By Rumer Godden, introduction by Phyllis Tickle

Loyola Press, 656 pages, $13.95 paper

This novel, originally published in 1969, is a portrait of a stylish, professional woman in London who forsakes a glittery life to join a cloistered Benedictine community. “The motto was `Pax,’ but the word was set in a circle of thorns,” opens the book, setting the tone for this wonderful novel about religious life.
