Waiting for a train to Chicago or Elgin has become a bit more pleasant these days for commuters in Schaumburg, with a roomier station and more protection from the elements.
Metra opened a new depot last week at the Schaumburg station, 2000 S. Springinsguth Rd., in the shadows of the Schaumburg Flyers’ Alexian Field.
The 3,600-square-foot depot includes new washrooms, a ticket office, improved platform surfaces and lighting, said Metra spokesman Tom Miller. A new outdoor shelter covers passengers on the platform.
There also is commercial space set aside in the new depot, where a coffee shop is planned.
The former depot, a 1,000-square-foot shelter without public washrooms, was built in 1982. It was demolished last year.
About 1,600 passengers each day use the Schaumburg station, Miller said.
