Burt, the younger of the Oak Lawn Police Department’s two drug-detecting dogs, got fired this week.

The 3-year-old Dutch shepherd had behavioral problems, could not always be relied on and barked in sick too often, said Police Chief Robert Smith.

Still, Burt will continue to live with his old cop partner, Todd Tenison. Village ordinances call for a $500 fee to buy retired police dogs, but the Village Board this week sold Burt to Tenison for a buck.

Ajax, a German shepherd with the department since 2001, remains an officer in good standing.
