Women shouldn’t count jewelry out as a last-minute gift for a guy this Christmas–which, apparently, some do, according to Sherry Bender, owner of The Goldsmith Ltd., a Chicago designer, manufacturer and retailer.

“Men get neglected a lot,” Bender said. “Women have always bought the majority of jewelry, so very often they don’t put a lot of effort as much into the detailing and design for men’s jewelry. And I’ve found they can be a great market out there.”

Bender, whose store is at 900 N. Michigan Ave., has noticed guys aren’t so much of the roughneck/he-man variety that they’re not into details.

They know how to play the bling–and we’re talking the normal-size, normal-looking selections and not pieces that look like manhole covers. “I try to make things that are not only designed well so that they’ll hold up, but they’re strong, they’re balanced,” said Bender, a jeweler for almost 30 years.

Bender said that guys are going for “bolder” pieces that, for instance, are made of granite instead of gold or silver; are of more weighty designs and are fashioned geometrically.

Beyond rings, she said, many guys are interested in cuff links, bracelets and tie bars.
