Aldermen have voted to increase the city’s property-tax levy by 3.5 percent, though officials said the amount could decrease when the levy is expected to be approved Dec. 19 on final reading.

The proposed levy, approved Monday on a 5-2 vote, would amount to $17.4 million, said Jim Egeberg, Des Plaines finance director. The increase would add about $17.50 in taxes for owners of a home valued at $350,000, he said.

Although aldermen do not control the Des Plaines Public Library’s budget, they are required to bundle the library’s levy into documents Des Plaines submits to Cook County officials. The library requested a 7 percent levy increase, officials said.

After the City Council meeting, Ald. Laura Murphy said she voted against the levy package because she opposed the library’s requested increase of about $369,000.
