The Bears have had a few six-game winning streaks over the past several decades, and when they have it has typically been with the same quarterback, good or bad, and there has been help from the run game or defense or both.

1. Kyle Orton, 2005

Rating: 62.5

No more than 16 completions in any of the six victories with NFL’s best defense and near-best rushing attack bearing the heaviest part of the load. Orton is no rookie at game management and avoiding sacks.

2. Jim Harbaugh, 1990

Rating: 81.9.

Topped 200 yards just twice in those six games but threw only one interception during the streak before ending season on IR with shoulder injury. Neal Anderson had 13 TDs and none of the six wins came against a team that finished better than 6-10.

3. Jim McMahon, 1985

Rating: 82.8.

Six straight twice–from Washington to Green Bay the first time, and from Indianapolis to the Super Bowl the second six. Opponents scored more than 10 points just once in each six-game streak. Bears outscored opponents 104-3 in three Steve Fuller starts before Miami.

4. Bob Avellini, 1977

Rating: 61.7.

Threw more INTs (18) than TDs (11), but didn’t need to do too much with Walter Payton gaining 1,852 yards and averaging 5.5 per carry. Bears won last six to gain playoffs, but lost at Dallas and coach Jack Pardee quit.

5. . . . And don’t forget 1986

The Bears won their first six and their last seven but no quarterback–McMahon, Mike Tomczak, Doug Flutie–started more than three straight. How good was that defense? Mike Tomczak was 7-0 in his starts with a 50.2 rating marked by 2 TD passes and 10 INTs.
