Aldermen have voted unanimously to earmark $7.4 million for street and infrastructure improvements in 2006.

The money will fund the first year of a five-year, $26.7 million capital-improvement program, Des Plaines City Engineer Tim Oakley said during a Monday night City Council meeting.

The program is funded by federal grants, sales taxes and taxes on gasoline sales and water use, he said.

The most expensive item approved for 2006 was the $1 million replacement of a 12-inch water main.
