The Naperville City Council on Tuesday approved plans to revamp downtown’s Central Park, where residents flock in the summer to the municipal band shell for outdoor performances.
Outlined were a number of improvements to the nearly 4-acre park at Washington Street and Jefferson Avenue, including new restrooms, possibly in a separate building near the back of the park; walkways to make the park handicapped accessible; updated playground equipment, through the Park District; and restoring the Veterans Memorial monument, with help from the American Legion.
A suggestion to remove some parking spaces surrounding the park was rejected.
Preliminary costs of the improvements are estimated around $400,000. City staff suggested applying for grants, working with other governmental agencies, and possibly tapping culture funds to help pay for the work.
