Freshman Tyrell Sutton took a seat on the bench for eight offensive plays Saturday night after his first-quarter fumble was returned 83 yards for a touchdown by Michigan’s Leon Hall, and it could happen again, coach Randy Walker said Monday.

“You can coach a kid with a lot of carries and they don’t put it on the ground,” Walker said.

The play gave Michigan a 14-0 lead on its way to a 33-17 win.

“It put us in a position that we could never quite climb out of,” Walker said.

It was the second straight game in which Sutton fumbled, and his fourth of the season in 194 touches (167 carries, 27 receptions). It was his second key drop. Against Wisconsin on Oct. 8, Sutton fumbled the ball away with 3 minutes 31 seconds left, and the Badgers drove 55 yards for a score that cut their deficit to 51-48, which turned out to be the final score. . . . He had also lost fumbles against Michigan State and Northern Illinois. . . .

Offensive tackle Vince Clarke, who earned his first start of the season Saturday, is out two to four weeks with a sprained knee. Dylan Thiry will return to the lineup.
