Big Star
“In Space”
The last proper Big Star album was 1974’s pioneering “Radio City.” The creative forces of this lineup seem to be pulling in different directions. Original Big Star drummer Jody Stephens sounds the same as ever; Jonathan Auer and Ken Stringfellow of The Posies do less than dead-on Big Star approximations, and leader Alex Chilton is his usual erratic self. It’s something of a mess, but at this point in the Big Star story, that actually further enhances its authenticity.
Best track: “Lady Sweet” sounds a little like classic Big Star had Aimee Mann been a contemporary.
