When the final out was recorded, the father of Sox pitcher Freddy Garcia, Freddy Sr., 46, leaped off a chair in his living room and yelled, “Freddy won! Freddy won!”

Then he ran into the kitchen, came out with three beers and said, “I don’t drink!” before downing one of the beers.

Fireworks began to go off all over Garcia’s neighborhood in the capital of Venezuela, home country of both the Sox pitcher and manager Ozzie Guillen. People blew horns and waved at each other from patios.

Octavio Eslava, 80, a friend of the Garcia family, yelled, “We’re champions! We’re champions!”
