Michigan coach Lloyd Carr doesn’t want his offense to get too excited about playing Northwestern’s defense, last in the nation with an average yield of 504.4 yards a game.
“It’s certainly a situation where their stats are extremely misleading,” Carr said. “What’s impressive is they lead the Big Ten in turnover margin. They’ve played explosive offensive football teams and found a way to force turnovers.”
Michigan’s offense is No. 8 in the Big Ten and 48th in the nation with 388 yards a game. The Wildcats have faced Michigan State (538.3 yards, No. 1 in Big Ten, No. 3 nationally), Purdue (453.6, No. 4, No. 20), Penn State (417.2, No. 5, No. 35), and Wisconsin (390.6, No. 7, No. 46). In non-conference play, they faced two of the nation’s top 10 in No. 5 Arizona State and No. 9 Northern Illinois.
