Mayor Steve Landek said the village is close to a deal with a developer to bring a major tenant to the struggling Bridgeview Court shopping center.
The retail development would replace the long-vacant Omni store, which will be demolished. Tenants in the center near 79th Street and Harlem Avenue would not be affected by the project, Landek said.
Landek said he could not reveal what will replace the 180,000-square-foot Omni store until officials complete negotiations with the developer. But he said the village should be ready to make an announcement in about a month.
The shopping center, which the village bought for $9.5 million, was to be razed to make way for the Chicago Fire’s new soccer stadium. But officials moved the stadium site a mile north and will focus on redeveloping the center.
Landek said the project, along with the stadium, should spur retail opportunities along Harlem Avenue.
“We’ll have an anchor on the north end and an anchor on the south end and we expect to have Harlem Avenue redeveloped over the next three years,” he said.
