“Leaders of the Free World”
Singer Guy Garvey and crew have mostly dropped the art-rock pretensions of their first two albums, offering something akin to funky sci-fi folk. There’s clearly more going on here than the surface reveals, and that’s not even counting the title track’s swipe at President Bush. If the strength of Elbow’s former releases was its ability to magically merge with the cosmos, this album’s immediacy implies it may be the one to leave the most lasting impact.
Best track: “Station Approach” begins as a folky dirge but ends a neo-psych stomper.
