“Apologies to the Queen Mary”
With production by Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock and a recent tour with Arcade Fire, it’s no shock that Canada’s Wolf Parade comes off sounding a little like both bands: Adenoidal, off-kilter vocals, ramshackle percussion and pretty anthems rule the disc. “Grounds for Divorce,” “Same Ghost Every Night” and “Shine a Light” are so low-key and messy, their pop smarts at first stay subtly hidden.
Best track: The album’s anthemic closing mini-epic, “This Heart’s On Fire,” is grand and moving at a mere four minutes.
